Too Many Pennies

Monday, May 9th, 2005 • Filed under Banks

David Posman, 33, was arrested in Providence, Rhode Island, after knocking out an armored car driver and stealing four bags of money. Each bag contained $800 dollars. However, the bags weighed thirty pounds each since they all contained PENNIES. The hefty bags slowed the fleeting Posman to a sluggish stagger. Police easily ran down and arrested the suspect.

While I was reading this story, it occured to me that I have a jug of pennies at home that weighs well over 30 pounds, and I was quite sure that it’s not even close to $800. So I weighed a penny, and…

A single penny weighs about 3.125 grams. One hundred pennies = 312.5 grams (one dollar). Eight hundred dollars worth of pennies = 312.5g (one dollar) times 800, or 250,000 grams, or 550 pounds. Not many people could lift 550 pounds and walk, let alone four BAGS weighing 550lbs each.

By the way, thirty pounds of pennies is around $44. If this story is based in truth, maybe they were $50 bags of pennies instead of $800

Jampler reholt is Right. And you don’t have to cuss up a storm. A handful of men can lift 2,200 pound Bags of Pennies. So this story is Fake. Sorry If I offend anyone.

Yeah, I work at a bank and a bag of pennies is only $50.00. $800.00 would, of course, be 16 bags. Way too much for one person to carry at once.

Hmm I agree with reholt that yes all pennies would be way more than the listed 30lbs, however notice that the description never said the bag only held pennies. Typical practice for armored escort of money is to have (if anything under the minimum amount for a bundled brick of money) more than one type of currency in a bag. So the bags probably had 50 dollars worth of pennies in each and cash to make up the 800. Just saying, don’t infer something that isn’t said and stop trying to act cool like you know everything. Also you need to check your scale considering the U.S. mint claims the penny is avg 2.5 grams if your getting 3+ grams you either have some horribly dirty pennies or your scale is off.

Please use correct figures and read properly before you decide to point out someones “mistake”. Otherwise you look like an ***.

Aleks, why don’t you stop giving your opinion if you don’t know what you are talking about. A penny weighs 2.5 grams if it’s 1983 to present or 3.1 grams if it’s 1981 or prior. A $50 bag weighs about $29-$34 depending on how many is copper. He would not be carrying mire than 4 bags x $50= $200
and would weighed about 120-130 lb total.

I sell copper pennies, email if you want to buy.
