The victim in this case described to reporters that the burglary who robbed him was “the world’s dumbest criminal,” and quite frankly, we don’t think that’s a very fair description. How about the solar system’s dumbest criminal or the galaxy’s dumbest criminal?

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (CBS2Chicago) — An alleged burglar is under arrest after he accidentally provided police with a key clue.

CBS 2 Northwest Indiana Bureau Chief Pamela Jones reports on the evidence that helped crack the case.

Saws, car stereos, even sets of golf clubs were all recovered from a string of burglaries in Northwest Indiana, and police think one man is responsible.

Ok sounds like your typical police blotter from Anytown U.S.A. What makes this guy such a dunderhead? Well, according to police quoted in the story, he left his social security card and a receipt from when he bonded out of jail on another burglary charge at the scene. Don’t worry, they also found some fingerprints at the scene.

How could someone possibly let such a thing happen? We have several theories: (1) he’s not incredibly bright, (2) he was cleaning out his wallet during the burglary to make room for an Arby’s gift certificate he was trying to steal from the victim’s house, (3) he wanted to give the victim his personal info so he could send him a W-2 at the end of the year.
