The Man of Steal

Any good crook will tell you, you know the kind of crook that doesn’t appear on this blog, that the best way to get away with the crime is not to look like the guy who would do such a thing. If you’re going to rob a bank, don’t wear a mask. If you’re going to start a scam, don’t go spending the money you’ve scored like crazy. And if you’re going to shoplift video games from a store, don’t look like a broken down geek.
OHIO (AP) — A Dayton area teenager who dressed up in a Superman costume gave new meaning to the role “Man of Steel.”
He was convicted Thursday of being the man who stole a DVD and video game from a Fairborn Kmart.
Matthew Binegar of Dayton was spotted putting merchandise in his costume by employees on January 23rd.
A Fairborn Municipal Court judge found him guilty yesterday of one count of criminal theft.
So why was Binegar dressed as the Man of Steel? Was he trying to show a not-so-subtle hint of irony that heroes are far and few between in this day and age? Did he think no one would remember a man dressed as Superman trying to rip off the store? Did he lose a bet with a costume store?
The costume is part of his job as a street spokesperson for a local apartment complex. I’m guessing he was wishing one of the three previous situations was the true one.
Binegar got a suspended 180 sentence for the 52 days in jail that he already served, and a $200 fine. He said he plans to do some serious soul searching about the state of his life at his “Fortress of Solitude,” or as it’s better known, his mother’s basement where he’s not allowed to bring girls over.
